Little things

Until recently, I never regarded a working elevator as a genuine godsend.  You see, my office building sits across from the train station and between the distance is a wide and busy interstate highway.  To be able to get to work, I have to go up the glass enclosed bridge and walk the approximately 250 steps to cross over above the speeding vehicles.  For a few days the elevator at the train station had been out of commission.  I had to battle the ascending 41-step stairs during commute time.  The climb would not have been bad if the weather was kinder.  But lately, we’ve had brutally cold spells and the climb had often left me breathless and painfully panting for my life.

For a few 7:00ish mornings, I negotiated that bridge totally in awe of the sunrise.  Angry orange clouds showed the promise of a new day.  I call them angry orange because the skies looked like ready to explode from the passionate flame burning underneath.  I cherished the few times I caught sight of such breathtaking view.

It’s really the simple pleasures that give me comfort and joy.  When my bus that would take me to destinations doesn’t come late, it’s a cause for gratitude.  When it snows hard and the pathways are promptly shoveled, I celebrate.

Every morning Dwayne (my morning driver) always greets me with a “Good Morning” and a bright, wide smile.  On Fridays, his typical exclamation is “Happy Friday!”  Not many public transit drivers are as friendly and happy to be doing their job and Dwayne makes the trip so much fun.

There is a guy with whom I share waiting time for the morning bus.  Even if he gets there ahead of me, he still lets me board first.  Obviously, "ladies first" is his policy.  Another man always offers me his seat on the packed train I take to work.  I am glad that chivalry is not really dead after all!

Then there’s Rebecca, one of my favorite checkout girls at the supermarket.  She is always very pleasant and polite, showing courteous eagerness at helping me and other customers with our purchases.  She’s so nice that if I don't get a chance to carry a small conversation with her, I might feel terrible about it.  Fortunately, there are usually a lot of items in my cart that we manage to chitchat during my visits.

There’s this cleaning crew guy at my office building that always smiles and wishes me "Good Night" whenever we bump into each other in the hallway.  Needless to say, his thoughtful gesture is appreciated.

A woman named Bonnie sometimes shares my ride home (only when she has to work later than usual at her law firm employment).  Every time we connect, we pick up where we left off.  Anyone within hearing distance would think that we are very good old friends.  The truth is, for a very long time we didn't even know each other's name!

Then there's the Chinese takeout girl who promptly fulfills my order.  She's no-nonsense and considerate of every customer's need to get their food fast. I appreciate that I never have to wait long to be served.

It’s true (at least for me) that little things mean a lot.  As I have personally experienced, joy is an awesome feeling that money cannot always buy.  I wish that everyone could get high on the freebies of the world.  Daily life, unburdened by price tags and financial expectations, gives us a reason to greet the day with exciting anticipation.  If we believe in God, it's a very good reason to be grateful for the grace of being in a happy place.

Public love

It’s “The Bachelor” season again and my Monday night is in a funk.  Every time this show airs, I mentally battle over whether or not to watch it… or to start learning how to knit.

If it were an unfamiliar face, the decision would be to stay away.  But Ben Flajnik (http://abc.go.com/shows/the-bachelor/bio/ben-flajnik/894880) was in Ashley Hebert’s “The Bachelorette” season and, nosey, hopeless romantic me need to know how he has moved on since Ashley dumped him.

Although I like the guy, I can’t stand the women.  On Day 1 those 25 good-looking babes are all suddenly smitten.  All have signed up to go on a journey to find love and to meet their soul mate.  Basically, they are there to be offered a rose.  Why not just grow your own rose garden?!, my sarcastic mind wants to know.

I don’t understand why women with poster look qualities would bother to go on national television to be romantically matched.  I have stood outside a supermarket waiting for the shuttle to take me to work when a blond bicycle-riding guy stopped to ask me:  “Should I venture out to find MY girl?”  It was 7: in the morning and, totally unprepared for such weird pick-up line so early in the day, I wasn't in the mood to feel romantic, passing up the opportunity to meet "Mr. Right-Enough-For-Right-Now".

Sorry if I digressed, but the point is, if there is a will there is a way!  People do not have to go public (translation:  have microphones and cameras recording their every word and action) to find love and affection.  Oh... I get it.  The girls want to travel the world on the network's dime, right?

I know, I know.  “The Bachelor” producers just want to give host Chris Harrison his job security.  But I wish that they do not have to make the girls look ditzy and desperate.  I hate it when women are made to look like fools with no brains in their heads.  I absolutely loathe seeing the girls lose their cool and behave erratically just to get one man’s (that is, Ben’s) attention.  Women behaving like fish wives look totally pathetic.

Maybe I am just plain boring and old-fashioned.  I do not like to see women fighting over a man.  Period.  I would rather see a bunch of males competing for a female!

If this season starts to send me to sleep, I think I will have to pick up some knitting on Monday nights.  Chances are, I will end up with a homemade shawl for next winter.

And Ben?  If the rumor mill got its facts straight, The Bachelor proposed to the girl who I don't like at all (she's the most annoying in my book).  He might have ended up with a fiancee alright, but I'll hold my breath… until the next season rolls around!

Feeling the age

My friend MaryJane always gives me a hard time when we talk about my age.

"You look really good for a 60-year old!" she said recently.  The truth is, MaryJane is in her early 70's and she looks terrific!  She can pass for a woman in her 50's.

We both have good genes to thank for.  I believe that having that advantage plus living a lifestyle that is devoid of abusive habits like smoking and drinking have allowed us the benefit of defying and not looking our biological age.

As I love to say, age is just a number.  We can look as young or as old as we feel.  There have been many times when I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders.  Lucky me, I was blessed with a healthy sense of humor and can laugh off anything that comes my way.

Many women get paranoid when it comes to revealing their age.  I think it's pure nonsense to keep one's age a "military secret."  Everyone should live an authentic life and hiding one's age is almost like living a lie.

When I was in my 50's I worked in a workplace where my associates were in their 30's.  The 20-year age difference was never a negative factor.  I always blended seamlessly because I never allowed "mid-life crisis" to get in the way of work performance.  In one company I worked for management preferred hiring mature women for the obvious reasons.  Older ladies have developed the discipline desirable to employers and don't easily crack under pressure.  They show up and do the job!

Many years ago, I worked with a woman who was a few years from retirement.  She told me that for as long as she had to work for a living, she would color her gray.  She was under the notion that companies had hiring preference for young people and she had to do her best to keep her competitive edge.

Well, I may not totally agree with her mentality, but I have taken her advice.  My gray is perpetually taken care of by some brunette concoction.  If I didn't follow her example, everyone will not have a problem believing my age.  Thank God for Clairol!

Unsafe surfing

Click on this link to learn about the United States Postal Service Spam alert to customers.

Cyber criminals have taken advantage of the season of giving to install malicious software that can harm our computers and steal personal data.  The best defense is never to open any e-mail that informs you of a pending package.  If you do, you throw yourself into the enemy’s ring and malicious software gets right into your computer.

Sometime ago my goddaughter e-mailed a link.  When I clicked on it, my computer almost became the casualty of a malignant virus.  Fortunately, my firewall was in place and the virus definitions in my computer were updated.  My operating system was instantly cleaned out.  Thank You, Jesus!

Recently I have been receiving tons of e-mails about funds allegedly transferred to me, complete with Western Union money transfer confirmation numbers (MTCN).  If I complied with the sender’s request to e-mail the contact listed in the message, or tried to pick up the funds using the MTCN provided, I probably would have put my personal integrity in jeopardy.  Ours has become an age of constant cyber criminal activity and everyone who spends time online must be on perpetual alert.

What happens if our computer gets held hostage by a cyber crook?  Chances are, our address books will get stolen and if sensitive data is stored in the hard drive, that too will be in jeopardy.  The cyber criminal will send e-mails to our contacts asking for monetary assistance.  One of the guys I used to work with had this unfortunate situation happen to him.  The crook sent messages to all his contacts informing them that he and his spouse were stranded in England because all their possessions were stolen.  The e-mail was asking for monetary help from his address book contacts.

The course of action is to NEVER open any message that is suspect or that comes from someone we are not familiar with.

One time I was reviewing an e-mail when an "alert" suddenly showed up on the screen.  It warned of "malware intrusion" and suggested that a scan be performed.  This scenario had happened in the past.  That time I allowed the scan to be performed and my computer ended up with a Trojan virus!  I spent almost half a day getting rid of it with the assistance of a long-distance Mircrosoft technie in another part of the world. I didn't want the same inconvenience to happen again so I didn't click on the "alert" box to stay out of harm's way.

As any computer owner knows, it is such a hassle to have to get rid of a virus.  If we don't know what to do and need a professional's assistance, the expense can amount to a small fortune.

Safe surfing to all!

Chemo Day

My BFF Josie (thanks, Girl Friend!) shared this awesome reminder about an awful disease.  Cancer is not a stranger to me as I have lost a few friends because of it.

Cancer is a strange cell.
You can go along for years in remission
and then one day it pops its head up again.
If you ever have it you will never be free of it.
Pray for the day there will be a permanent cure.

A SMALL REQUEST...

93% won't forward, but I'm sure you will.
A small request.....Just one line

Dear God,
I pray that You will guide someone to find a cure for cancer in 2012.
In Jesus Name, Amen.

All you are asked to do is keep this circulating.
Even if it's only to one more person.
In memory of anyone you know who has been
struck down by cancer or is still living with it.
A Candle Loses Nothing by Lighting Another Candle.

Please Keep This Candle Going

A message to Filipinos around the world

Rollie, my BFF Josie's friend, passed on this material for the benefit of Pinoys who visit this blog site.  Thanks, R & J!

Fr. James Reuter, SJ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_B._Reuter) has focused on a Philippine problem that is like a wart that simply won't go away.  As I sit from a long distance assessing the monster problem of the country that has given me so much, I cannot help but feel helplessly disheartened.  I spent half of my life in that once beautiful nation.  No matter what road it is headed now, I maintain a feeling of loyalty and gratitude towards it.

As someone has wisely suggested, "Let us unite in spirit praying for the Philippines!"

I strongly second the motion.

* * *

My Beloved Philippines
By Father James Reuter, S.J.

BY HER own admission, GMA (Gloria Macapagal Arroyo) rightfully assessed that over the last decades, our republic has become one of the weakest, steadily left behind by its more progressive neighbors. Forty years ago, we were second only to Japan in economic stature, and way ahead of Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand.. Today, at our present growth rate, it will take us 30 years to get to where Thailand is. 1. A population of 160 million; 2. Of those, 70 to 90 million (equivalent to our current population) will live below the poverty line; 3. Our national debt is estimated to be at US$200B (compared to US$28B when Marcos fled, and US$53B today); 4. We will be competing, not against Thailand or even Vietnam, but against Bangladesh; 5. We will be the most corrupt nation in Asia, if not in the world (we’re already ranked 11th most corrupt nation by Transparency International)...

THE SIGNS are clear. Our nation is headed towards an irreversible path of economic decline and moral decadence. It is not for lack of effort. We’ve seen many men and women of integrity in and out of government, NGOs, church groups and people’s organization devote themselves to the task of nation-building, often times against insurmountable odds. But not even two people’s revolutions, bloodless as they may be, have made a dent in reversing this trend. At best, we have moved one step forward, but three steps backward. We need a force far greater than our collective efforts, as a people, can ever hope to muster. It is time to move the battle to the spiritual realm. It’s time to claim God’s promise of healing of the land for His people. It’s time to gather God’s people on its knees to pray for the economic recovery and moral reformation of our nation. Is prayer really the answer?

Before you dismiss this as just another rambling of a religious fanatic, I’d like you to consider some lessons we can glean from history. England’s ascendancy to world power was preceded by the Reformation, a spiritual revival fueled by intense prayers. The early American settlers built the foundation that would make it the most powerful nation today -- a strong faith in God and a disciplined prayerful life. Throughout its history, and especially at its major turning points, waves of revival and prayer movements swept across the land. In recent times, we see Korea as a nation experiencing revival and in the process producing the largest Christian church in the world today, led by Rev. Paul Yongi Cho. No wonder it has emerged as a strong nation when other economies around it are faltering. Even from a purely secular viewpoint, it makes a lot of sense. For where there is genuine humbling and seeking of God through prayer, moral reformation necessarily follows. And this, in turn, will lead to general prosperity. Yes, we believe prayer can make a difference. It’s our only hope.

TODAY, we launch this email brigade, to inform Filipinos from all over the world to pray, as a people, for the economic recovery and moral reformation of our nation. We do not ask for much. We only ask for five minutes of your time in a day, to forward this email to your close friends and relatives. This is the kind of unity that can make a big difference. Of course, if you feel strongly, as I do, about the power of prayer, you can be more involved by starting your own prayer group or prayer center. We have tried people power twice; in both cases, it fell short. Maybe it’s time to try prayer power. God never fails. Is there hope? Yes! We can rely on God’s promise, but we have to do our part. If we humble ourselves and pray as a people, God will heal our land.. By God’s grace, we may yet see a better future for our children. “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14). If you care for your children and grandchildren, PLEASE pass this on.... Let’s not just abandon the Philippines.

Dolphin slaughter

Dolphin lovers should watch "The Cove," if they would like to know why they should do something about the plight of endangered dolphins in Japan.

A weekend ago I watched a documentary film that brought a shocking expose.  "The Cove," the best documentary film of 2009, details the dolphin slaughter annually happening in Taiji, Japan.  Most people of the world are not aware that more than 20,000 dolphins and porposies are being slaughtered every year off the coast in that Asian country.  If that is not bad enough, the dolphin meat, fraudulently labeled as whale meat, is sold as food in Japan and other Asian places.  Dolphin meat contains toxic levels of mercury.  In the 1950's, the Minamata disease caused by severe mercury poisoning resulted in the birth of deformed Japanese children (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minamata_disease).

The release of "The Cove" has created worldwide attention to this problem and brought awareness to the dangers of consumption of seafood contaminated with mercury.  Those in power are pressured to end the annual practice of dolphin slaughter.

According to http://www.takepart.com/cove the release of the documentary has produced positive results:

It’s been working. The film has been making waves since it premiered last year. Critical praise and audience awards worldwide have focused international attention on Taiji and the annual dolphin drives off the coast of Japan. Under intense pressure, Taiji called for a temporary ban on killing bottlenose dolphins in 2009. The film, originally rejected at the Tokyo Film Festival, was eventually shown due to public outcry, and has appeared in theaters in Japan. Residents in Taiji are being tested for mercury poisoning, and for the first time Japanese media are covering the issue.

But the effort needs to continue. On September 1, the six-month dolphin hunting season opened again, and fishermen in Taiji plan to take to the cove despite international pressure. Experts say education, awareness and persistence are needed to eventually turn the tide.

1.4MM people have signed the petition to end the slaughter, but this is just the beginning. The hunt still goes on. Find out what you can do to help.

A matter of faith

Like many e-mail account holders, I get a great deal of forwarded messages.  Below is an example which can be a challenge to the faith of many folks specially if a relationship with a Higher Power is non-existent.  Honestly, I would rather get this kind of e-mail than the nasty, fradulent scams aimed at deception that litter my cyber mailbox.

Thanks to Colleen for sharing this piece...

Read this sentence very carefully

"To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did."

When God takes something from your grasp. He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better.

Concentrate on this sentence. "The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you."  Something good will happen to you today, something that you have been waiting to hear. Please do not break. Just 27 Words,  'God our Father , walk through my house and take away all my worries and illnesses and please watch over and heal my family in your name, Amen.'

This prayer is so powerful. Pass this to 12 people including me. A blessing is coming to you in the form of a new job, a house, marriage or financially. Do not break or ask questions. This is a test. Does God come first in your life? If so, stop what you're doing and send it to 12 people now.

Watch what He does!

Martin Luther King quotes (Part 4)

Courtesy of http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/martin_luther_king_jr.html, below is the final installment of famous MLK quotations:

The means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.

The moral arc of the universe bends at the elbow of justice.

The Negro needs the white man to free him from his fears. The white man needs the Negro to free him from his guilt.

The past is prophetic in that it asserts loudly that wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows.

The quality, not the longevity, of one's life is what is important.

The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be... The nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremists.

The sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.

The time is always right to do what is right.

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.

The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.

There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love.

There is nothing more tragic than to find an individual bogged down in the length of life, devoid of breadth.

To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.

War is a poor chisel to carve out tomorrow.

Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows.

We are not makers of history. We are made by history.

We have guided missiles and misguided men.

We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now.

We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.

We must build dikes of courage to hold back the flood of fear.

We must concentrate not merely on the negative expulsion of war but the postive affirmation of peace.

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.

We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

We must use time creatively.

We who in engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive.

We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people, but for the appalling silence of the good people.

Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.

Whatever your life's work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better.

When you are right you cannot be too radical; when you are wrong, you cannot be too conservative.

Martin Luther King quotes (Part 3)

Courtesy of http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/martin_luther_king_jr.html, below are more famous MLK quotations:

Means we use must be as pure as the ends we seek.

Never forget that everything Hitler did in Germany was legal.

Never succumb to the temptation of bitterness.

Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon. which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. It is a sword that heals.

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

One of the greatest casualties of the war in Vietnam is the Great Society... shot down on the battlefield of Vietnam.

One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.

Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.

Pity may represent little more than the impersonal concern which prompts the mailing of a check, but true sympathy is the personal concern which demands the giving of one's soul.

Property is intended to serve life, and no matter how much we surround it with rights and respect, it has no personal being. It is part of the earth man walks on. It is not man.

Rarely do we find men who willingly engage in hard, solid thinking. There is an almost universal quest for easy answers and half-baked solutions. Nothing pains some people more than having to think.

Science investigates religion interprets. Science gives man knowledge which is power religion gives man wisdom which is control.

Seeing is not always believing.

Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will.

Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.

The art of acceptance is the art of making someone who has just done you a small favor wish that he might have done you a greater one.

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: "If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?" But... the good Samaritan reversed the question: "If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?"

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.

The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood.

The hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of great moral conflict.

The limitation of riots, moral questions aside, is that they cannot win and their participants know it. Hence, rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat. It involves an emotional catharsis, but it must be followed by a sense of futility.

Martin Luther King quotes (Part 2)

Courtesy of http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/martin_luther_king_jr.html, below are more famous MLK quotations:

Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable... Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.

I am not interested in power for power's sake, but I'm interested in power that is moral, that is right and that is good.

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood.

I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.

I just want to do God's will. And he's allowed me to go to the mountain. And I've looked over, and I've seen the promised land! I may not get there with you, but I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land.

I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality... I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.

I submit that an individual who breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for law.

I submit to you that if a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.

I want to be the white man's brother, not his brother-in-law.

If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.

If physical death is the price that I must pay to free my white brothers and sisters from a permanent death of the spirit, then nothing can be more redemptive.

If we are to go forward, we must go back and rediscover those precious values - that all reality hinges on moral foundations and that all reality has spiritual control.

In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

It is incontestable and deplorable that Negroes have committed crimes; but they are derivative crimes. They are born of the greater crimes of the white society.

It is not enough to say we must not wage war. It is necessary to love peace and sacrifice for it.

It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important.

Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress.

Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend.

Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.
